【Abstract:】The problem of how the authenticity of a realist documentary film image is constructed and how non-fiction filmmakers are employing strategies of authentication in their documentary film work has a long history within general film studies and theories dealing with the epistemological status of the non-fiction film image. Starting with my own research on early Chinese ethnographic documentary film and the answers I tried to give to these questions within this research, this lecture also tries to incorporate some more recent theoretical findings on the problem of filmic authenticity especially as we have now entered the era of the“digital image” by focusing on several selected examples from current Chinese and Western non-fiction films, including ethnographic documentaries.
