Abstract: This book was written before WWII by a Professor of Social Anthropology at Yenching University in China; he returned home to his native village in the province of Fukien in southern China and was surprised by the difference in development of two households that he had known since his childhood. 25 years previously the two families had been business partners and equally prosperous; now they were totally different - one was at the peak of prosperity, the other descending into poverty. This study is written in the form of a novel with the central character being the head of the prosperous family. I found it easy to read and so very interesting, especially in view of the modern Chinese ethic (law) of a one child family.
