This department was founded in the January of 2004. As a main sub-discipline of Sociology, it focuses its attention on the studies of the relation between culture and society, and the function of culture in human being’s thought and behavior. It probes the relation between human being and human being, human being and nature, human being and their psychic in social processes. There are four scholars in total, including three with Ph.D., one with MA, and one professor.
Since its foundation, the department has partaken in the following major research activities:
1) “The Research on IT and Intellectual Property Rights” co-organized by China, USA, Germany, Singapore, India, and Japan;
2) “The Comparative Studies on the Changes of Social Consciousness of East Asian Youth” co-organized by Japan, China, and South Korea (completed);
3) Research on Aids and Public Health System;
4) Anthropological research on the development of community;
5) Anthropological seminars by prominent Chinese and foreign scholars;
6) Long-term research plan on the organization and activities of Asian NGOs;
7) Summer Course project co-organized with North Carolina University;
8) Graduate student programs;
The Center focuses on the academic researches and fieldwork on contemporary Chinese socio-cultural issues. At the same time, it has participated into international researches on related issues. It has cooperative, multi-disciplinary research projects with Germany, National University of Singapore, Harvard University, North Carolina University, Japanese National Policy Research Institute, Indian Research Institute on Literature, and Sociological Association of South Korea. The research projects cover the fields of history, economics, sociology, philosophy, legality, political science, and religious studies. It has organized international, multi-disciplinary researches and academic dialogue, and established widespread and long-lasting academic contacts and networks. Domestically, the Center has set up long-term cooperation with Beijing University, Tsinghua University, Zhongshan University, as well as with the academic institutes, scholars, and governments in Shaanxi, Yunnan, Qinghai, Tibet and Sichuan.
The recent and mid-term plans for researches and academic communication of the Center include the following activities:
1) Providing anthropology as one of the required courses in doctorate and master’s programs in sociology;
2) In addition to individual research plans, organizing anthropological research projects and establishing research base in the country;
3) Continuing the international cooperative research projects;
4) Hosting anthropology seminars and organizing academic communication with prominent scholars in and out of China;
5) When conditions permit, founding Chinese anthropology journal, and setting up Internet networks for Chinese anthropology;
