Social Survey & Methodology

Both quantitative and qualitative methods in empirical sociological researches are the focuses of this research department. The department has conducted major research projects, listed in the following, since its establishment in 1990s.

1) Economic and Social Survey of Hundred Municipals and Counties in Urban and Rural China, 1989-1999, funded by National Foundation of Social Science and CASS.

2) Survey on Family Life of Urban and Rural Chinese, collaborative project of China and USA.

3) Seminar on Advanced Survey Methodology, funded by The Ford Foundation and Chinese Sociological Association.

4) S Survey on Marriage and Family in Seven Cities, China, funded by CASS.

5) Survey on Social Change in Coastal Developed Regions of China, funded by CASS.

6) Comparative Study of Chinese and Japanese Family, collaborative project of China and USA.

7) On Current Status of Chinese Sociological Research – A Methodological Survey, funded by CASS)

8) Translations of SAGE Quantitative Analysis Series 007, funded by Institute of Sociology, CASS).

9) Multiple Crosssectional Surveys on Social Change, funded by CASS.

10) Attainment of Individual’s Occupational Status and Structural Continuity in the Process of Social Transformation, funded by Institute of Sociology, CASS.

11) Databank of Social Survey, funded by National Foundation of Social Sciences.

12) On Quantitative Analytical Models in Social Research, 2002, funded by Institute of Sociology, CASS.

13) Computerization of Qualitative Analysis Process, funded by CASS.

The following projects will be scheduled in the near future:

1) Collection of existed survey dataset, compilation into an integrated databank system of survey data by standardization.

2) Maintenance and development of the databank mentioned above, publish of special reports focused on specific topics, working papers by secondary analysis based on the databank.

3) Longitudinal Surveys focused on social changes, and the relevant methodological issues, such as survey design, statistical models.

4) Polls of public opinions by Center of Social Survey.
