The department was established 10 years ago. Currently it has 8 researcher members. Among them, 3 are senior research fellows, and 5 are associate senior research fellows. The department focuses their research on the social structure and social change in rural China. We specified our research in 8 fields:
1) Researching on the social stratification and interest groups in contemporary rural China.
2) Researching on villages and rural community;
3) Researching on the local organizations, power structure and authority in rural China.
4) Researching on the rural development;
5) Researching on the rural-urban relation and urbanization;
6) Researching on the rural migration;
7) Oral history of the important events in contemporary rural China.
8) Researching on the ability of sustainable development in rural China.
We try to integrate the applicable study and the fundamental theoretical study. We also use multiple methods and multiple approaches of theories in our research. We paid much attention on the quantitative analysis; we also use case study, as well as participatory observation in our research.
In the past 10 years, we conducted many research projects, including study on rural migration, private entrepreneur, and social stratification. We also completed research on rural finance. We are starting the survey of 100 villages in 2002.
