Among others, the Family & gender Research Department is one of the earliest in the Institute of Sociology, CASS. It focuses its research on family sociology and gender study, of which the former, as a branch of sociology, chiefly deals with family structure, family evolution, changes in family systems, etc; and the latter with the gender equality, the stains of women, Feminist theory, etc. It has fulfilled such programs as “Family Survey in 5 Cities”, “Rural Family Survey in 14 Provinces and Cities”, “Employment and Families of Professional Women in China and Japan”, “Survey of the Elderly in 10 Cities around China” (with the cooperation of Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences), “Family Awareness and Living Situation in Chinese and Japanese Cities: A Comparative Study of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Bangkok”, as well as “Studies on the Returned Overseas Chinese: Impressions of Overseas Study, Occupational Mobility and Accomplishments”. “Support of the Old in China’s Rural and Urban Areas: Status quo, Tendency and Countermeasures” It also played host to the “Symposium on the Comparison between Chinese and Japanese Families” (1991, 1992) and the international symposium on “Families and Future in the Asia-Pacific Region”.
